The PJ (poor joke) above might no longer remain a PJ if banana peel is replaced by a typical problematic situation one encounters in daily routine. The question remains unanswered then: Why do some people find it difficult to act beyond cure? They do think 'Prevention is The Best Cure' though! I was no different from them! But now my journey is gathering speed, hopefully in the direction that the blog is supposed to drive towards. Checkout my other blogs and work at http://www.worldOFkaizen.com/

You seem Reasonable if you appear Un-reasonable

Just after finishing my session in a seminar at NOVOTEL Juhu, I went for a stroll at the adjacent beach.

Like a maverick, I wished to take picture of a tea-vendor there. I was impressed by his entrepreneurship, his eye-contact with prospective customers, his smile and particularly impressed by the technique (see the tea-kettle covered by a reused-tin-box) he had used in order to keep his tea-service hot-n-fresh in line with his jingled-promise, 'Gar...r... ma...a-Garam-Cha....a...a....aay' (Hottest-tea)!

My colleague laughed at me just like the colleague of the vendor who also objected me sarcastically for wishing to take their photograph. You can see all of them standing around (see picture).

Ignoring all of them, I explained to the vendor that the picture may appear in a blog for whatever worth it may be to it's readers. Not only was he most obliged to grant permission to me but also made 'other-legs' in the picture to 'disappear' at once. See the 'broad-smiley' in next picture.

After a couple of hours I was back to the hotel in order to attend some other function. I noticed that 'hot-n-fresh' snacks were being served there using a similar-but-sophisticated technique.

Immediately I grabbed the opportunity to click that picture too. Some people looked at me wondering foolish-me 'clicking' instead of 'digging' into the snacks. For them I was a novice to the 'starters'.

I am a firm believer that opportunities can be discovered as well as createdOpportunities hardly knock with intimations. That's why one needs to be prepared. When both, the preparation and opportunities, meet progress is inevitable.

The tea-vendor at Juhu-beach didn't appear before me 'by-telling'. His technique may not be unique though.

No one told me to notice it, nor to click it. I did it by 'being-aware' myself. I didn't know that a similar technique was going to appear before me after a couple of hours. I also didn't know that this subject was going to emerge in this blog post.

While taking the picture I only knew that there is some learning there that was worth capturing.

Just as there is nothing useless nor worthless in this universe, there is nothing or no-one from whom one can't learn from. Even a tiny sand-particle finds its use as raw material for Aluminum or as a worthy aggregate in construction industry. An innocent 'what is this' or 'why-this-way' question (even by a child) may lead to solution of a chronic problem that otherwise stays unsolved for decades.

Apart from an opportunity my curiosity gave me to cover the tea-vendor's matured-technique in this blog post, I could also reinforce my-thoughts on how 'value' can either get created or destroyed.

Vendor at the beach kept his business purely 'functional'. That's why he was able to offer spiced-tea at Rs 10/per serving as against Rs 500 in the Star-hotel. And I am sure he was able to do it with better profitability than the hotel barring the scale of operations. One may doubt quality of his tea as well as process of making it though. However it's worth comparing the both academically. Value provided by Rs 10 tea definitely mattered to those customers who mattered. And when-what-matters-to-whom depends on time-n-place that matters.

In the hotel one bears higher charges for so-called better or for, may I say, at times desire or want-based affluent practices. One pays extra for getting her ego polished, the hand-gloves, the uniform, the style of serving, etc. and even the smile that the maker-&-bearer is supposed to wear.

Study the investment made in the paraphernalia in the third picture: the stainless steel equipment used, polished suit the boy is wearing, etc. It may be difficult to know, though, how much of all that including the 'smile' of the bearer is genuinely better or worse than that of the beach-fellow. The beach vendor had primarily invested 'himself' more in the business rather than the (conventional) financial investment.

I have seen so-called 'clean-bearers' in so-called star-hotels arranging cups with their bare-fingers dipped into it when no one is there to watch. On the other hand, final serving is in style with hand-gloves on.

One activity happens behind the screen while the other in front of it. Because that's the way quality and value gets perceived differentially. Actually it's relative. It's as good as in the hands-mind-and-spirit of the persons involved in executing-managing-leading-and-delivering it.

Purpose of this blog post is actually to bring out more learning than the bonus-tips learnt as above.

The learning:

Being proactive or reactive itself is relative!

If some activity done 'then' (at a given point in time in past) is proved useful and preventive in future, in the hindsight it's considered as proactive. Until then more often it's laughed at as being idiosyncratic. For people around me on the beach, I might have appeared as an idiosyncratic taking pictures 'reactively-n-randomly'.

Why bother about others particularly if you have chosen to perform an act with a clear aim and calculated risk in mind! In that case why should that activity not be considered as proactive and worth moving ahead with although for others it might appear as useless!

While behaving in such a maverick-way, you may find, not one-or-two but many distractors around. It's worth ignoring them.

It's worth sticking to your stand if you have clarity. One must have humility though to make corrections to one's aim as well as modus-operendi by picking up threads from critics and distractors. It's surely advantageous to do so.

Albert Einstein did it.
Thomas Alva Edison did it the maverick-way.
Mahatma Gandhi did it.
Nelson Mandela did it.

Conventionally Sir Issac Newton should have eaten 'the apple that fell down'. He didn't. That's why he could do what he did.

They all seemed unreasonable 'then' for the world around.
Now in the hindsight what do those critics say about Einstein-Edison-Newton.

By-the-way, I do see a Mini-Edison in the person who first conceived a reused-tin-box in order to cover the tea-kettle. Purpose: to protect fire below it from getting extinguished. His technique is already standardized by his fraternity.

I am looking forward to some improvements over this itself. May be there are some already**. If not, my suggestion is to have one more tin-box outside the current one covering the kettle also. And between the two tin-boxes a thermocoal inserted as an insulator so that the tea-kettle stays hot for a longer time. Imagine, even if 20% re-heats are eliminated it's a saving of 20% fuel in addition to what is already saved so far.

But meanwhile for whatever is done, he is an incremental-innovator for me. He has innovated in his own context. He's empowered himself to exercise his own authority to conserve energy. Imagine the miracle if everyone saves so with a little more consciousness. Imagine overcoming difficulties creatively (without fear of 'failure' in conventional sense of the world) instead of crying about them.

For me the behavior of refusing to stay stuck in the 'fix-it' kind of 'Jugaadi-Indian' approach, behavior of making a 'sincere-attempt-to-try' to make-it-better on-goingly is a success. This is the Kaizen-approach invented by Toyota where everyone picks-up a 'cry' in order to make an improvement upon although there may not be 'anyone-to-cry'.

For me the"3-Idiots" (from Hindi-Movie) kind of ingenious ones who experiment their unconventional-thoughts are successful Kaizenees rather than so-called genius-preachers, the poison-ees who adhere to conventions. The latter lock themselves in status-quo(s), conventional-thoughts and 'cries' prevailing around.

So what's the take-home?

It may be other's job to consider you a Big-Fool, a Big-Idiot, and what-not. It may be their job not-once but each-day to kill your motivation, enthusiasm, and with that kill your original ideas or even incremental ones built on others.

But it's your own (job) to consider yourself above such foolishness particularly if you know your aim and purpose of being: The self-actualization! It's your own duty to see yourself in the ranks of 'Gandhiji-Edison-Einstein-Newton-to-be' without being foolishly over-confident though and with 1000xTimes 'their-humility' if not more. That's a way to make some mark on your name.

It may take longer-than-you-think though for your-own-small-world around you to say: Progress in this particular domain is because of 'unreasonableness' of This-Man!

In any case, no one would dare to deny the fact as someone has rightly said that "All the progress in this world is because of unreasonable people"!!

What do you do when a dog barks at you?

I mind my business if the dog minds it's own business.
But what do I do if it barks at me?

What options does one have when a dog on street barks at her while s/he is busy minding her business?

Option-1, Fail-to-notice or Simply-walk-away hoping that it won't harm me.
Option-2, Flight as they say or Run-away thinking that it will harm me.
Option-3, Fight-back 'Acting' or Be prepared to Hit-back-hard (in order to prevent dog becoming offensive).

If you have tried each or some of these options sometime or the other in past, it may be interesting for you to study the consequences you faced.

'Funny' were those days when I faced such situations particularly on lonely streets while returning late from library during my college days.

If I simply walked away, the dog would continue barking. At times it became aggressive too. What-if I had not 'acted' to hit back with a stone? 'Fear of consequences' itself used to force me to 'act' anyway. I still continue the practice of 'acting' if needs be.

Once while a friend was with me, by-design I 'acted' to run away. And the dog became aggressive. It ran after me. Of course we were well-prepared to protect ourselves.

What's the learning?

If you keep quiet when someone hits you, be it a physical assault or a competitor's attack, actually you end up reinforcing the aggressor's behavior as justified. Like the street-dog, aggressor might become aggressive every time you are in sight.

Unless there's clarity-on or fear-of 'consequences', the aggressor would continue enjoying the bullying.

What's your role then? To subscribe to the famous Gandhian principle of "If someone slaps you on one cheek, show him your other cheek."? Or behave like epic character Raam?

If you misinterpret this statement to your detriment, you should be responsible and accountable for the consequences.

Perhaps Gandhiji himself didn't mean it that way. At least I am not ready to believe this at the cost of facing consequences of some Gandhian researcher's annoyance though.

I believe that Gandhiji himself hated cowardliness. Perhaps difference in his approach was that he was bold enough to be ready to face adverse consequences, if any, of adopting non-violent mode while fighting for just-rights.

My corollary in understanding Gandhiji is if I am not bold enough to face consequences of choosing non-violent mode then I must either take help of available lawful modes or in fact hit-back-hard in case of emergency or rather fight back well-in-time (proactively) in order to prevent one from arising. Care-before-Cure I mean. It might mean using Krishna-tactics to ward off sanely-looking people but insanely-inside.

Title-line of a Hindi song aroused P.J.-poet in me to pen down my belief in Krishna-kind of philosophy in this context to live in the modern world.

Deity is in the eyes of the beholder

Sometime ago I received a divinely-beautiful picture on social media. It was an idol of 'Lord-Shiva' in the backdrop of Sun.

Deity is in the eyes of the beholder !!

This is what I murmured on looking at it instead of "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder" as they often say!

I also 'read' the picture as...
Isn't it possible to embrace even Sun if One-believes-in-Self as an infinitely decimated part of the super power though! Of course, at the same time one must not abuse the beauty of the Nature-God!

Else as another picture depicts, 'God-Shiva', The-Supreme Generator-Operator of the Universe-and-the-Nature won't take much time to switch-her-role to be 'Deity-Shankar': The-Supreme-Destructor !

What Moral-tips one may draw from so-called 'natural' calamities & devastations therefrom?

1/ Let's not push God-Shiva to be Deity-Shankar.

2/ G-O-D, The Generator-Operator-Destructor, The Universal-Energy is omni-present and  holistically well-balanced in and around the beauty of The-Nature itself and its creations rather than being concentrated in an idol.

3/ An idol itself will be helpless if we contribute in imbalancing the Nature by involving in unnatural and wasteful human activities.

4/ We ourselves must take care of both The-Self as well as the beauty of The-Nature-God rather than being under the influence of blind-faith that S/He is there to cure us of any of our own mis-doings.

Who's Just, Who's Unjust

Just read about a journalist releasing news sitting over shoulders of a flood-affected villager. He was dismissed from service by the media company as soon as the news broke out. Perhaps the quick action was to tackle public pressure or was to pre-empt competition from enhancing their own TRP by over-publicizing it.

While I am not justifying his 'misdeed', some other questions do remain unanswered in my mind. I tried to capture them in the form of a poem in the end.

Could the journalist have covered the news in the 'depth' that he wished to, by any other means? Perhaps yes as one might tend to think so from the video

But then were other means available to him there? Video tells only part of the story. Under what circumstances and with what facilities was the journalist operating there in order to collect total news in 'depth'?

Anyway having done so, was he 'sitting over shoulders' with an intention of atrocity? And if at all it's a mistake, in retrospect one may find number off them at one's own personal level.

Let's look at it the other way round.

If there was an opportunity for the flood-affected villager to earn his bread for that day by helping carry the journalist over his  shoulders, what right do others (be it public, a corporate house or government) get to snatch it from him? Have there not been Human-Rickshaws in Kolkatta earning their livelihood for so long on similar lines?  It has been a socioeconomic need!

If at all one finds the journalist atrocious then there have been many more so far in not providing alternative job opportunities to needy forcing them to resort to inhuman jobs such as Human-Rickshaw pullers.

Likewise if we shift our attention to in-discipline in other disciplines and fields, one might find many such atrocities.

If someone dies in an accident while negotiating a road full of pot-holes that s/he couldn't spot due to non-functional street-lights, are the concerned authorities considered atrocious? Do the concerned authorities such as municipality or electricity-boards, etc. get sued and convicted for dirty-danger-difficult conditions on road?

If a city like Mumbai goes under water due to illegal constructions and hutments in and around nullahs blocking water-flow resulting in colossal loss to lives and properties, are the concerned authorities, goons and politicians supporting them considered as atrocious?

These are realities not 'ifs-and-buts' stories. If one deep-dives into crises or near-miss cases or studies fatalities she reads about each day, 'atrocities' might be found in abundance.

Who will decide then 'what's right' and 'what's wrong', 'what's an atrocity and what's not one'?

Who will decide 'who's right' and 'who's wrong' in cases such as above?

If the journalist's act was wrong and atrocious then the sense-of-urgency demonstrated by the concerned is commendable. In that case, can decision-makers in other disciplines and fields such as above demonstrate similar sense-of-urgency in awarding justice in case of bigger and criminal atrocities?

Hope to receive your comments on tips covered in here and on the poem titled:

Who's Just Who's Unjust

Await English version of the poem soon.

Do you exercise your choice meaningfully

'Exercise your choice' they say. Remembering it, sometimes I 'choose' to read emails in part to suit my convenience.
Actually there are infinite 'choices in life' if you 'exercise your choice' to think so. Some 'exercise choice meaningfully'. Some do so 'meanly'.

In my understanding, a choice is 'meaningful' if intention ... (CLICK HERE to read more & to read complete TEXT)

Here in the picture is a poem that evolved for Swara-Sampada music group as a result of exercising choice.

Tolerate Once, Twice, Thrice?

Recently I came across a spiritual article on Tolerance that referred to UNESCO's definition: "Tolerance is respect, acceptance and appreciation of the rich diversity of our world's cultures, our forms of expression and ways of being human. It is fostered by knowledge, openness, communication, and freedom of thought, conscience and belief. Tolerance is harmony in difference."

Sometimes it appears difficult to practice some spiritual prescriptions such as above. Such sane characteristics typical of epic-character 'Rama' become impractical especially while dealing with insane 'Kaansaa's kind black behaviors. So I dug into UNESCO's definition further knowing very well that I am too small a fly in front of spiritual Gurus and UNESCO's definition as well that went on to say that, "Tolerance is the responsibility that upholds human rights, pluralism (including cultural pluralism), democracy and the rule of law."

On seeing reference to "the rule of law" in the definition, I was a bit relieved.

How long does one tolerate a given abnormal situation or an abnormal behavior, be it that of self or that of others?

Once, Twice, Thrice? How many times? Everyone faces this dilemma some time or the other.

Epic character Rama in you may tolerate abnormal behaviors limitlessly. However another epic character Krishna 'directed me' to devise my own method to make a judgement.

In any given situation there may be an involvement of man, machine (equipment), material, method (a standard, a process or a procedure to perform act/s) in a typical work environment.

Anything going wrong in any one of these ingredients individually or collectively may create an undesired or a mistakeful outcome that one refers to  as an abnormal situation. It's like an undesired, out-of-tune, out-of-beat, noise instead music getting produced in an orchestra.

The undesired outcome may be due to a collection of mistakes. Role of 'music director' of the situation is to track and trace such mistakes in order to  'orchestrate' prevention of those for producing desired effect in future.

So as a student of Kaizen-school-of-thoughts, in order to prevent making wrong judgement while studying an undesired situation, I identified three categories of mistakes.

1/ Inadvertent mistakes
2/ Careless mistakes
3/ Criminal mistakes

An inadvertent mistake is unintentional. It's not done on purpose. It might just  happen as a result of missing consciousness of one's own mistake or that of others. It is like falling in a given pit or a pot-hole on road for the first time. The cause may be inattention while talking on cell phone. Or it may be that  someone else being on wrong side forced the victim on right (correct) side to suffer.

A careless mistake happens due to missing concern or worry about consequences of a mistake. It might occur as a result of not giving sufficient attention or thought, especially concerning it's avoidance or harm therefrom. It is like falling in a pit second time while talking on cell phone. Mostly fools fall in this category.

A criminal mistake is the one that recurs due to recurring carelessness. It's criminal since there is a resistance to learn from past mistakes. It's criminal if it's done intentionally. In most cases, the criminal himself may not fall but surely makes fellow-beings fall and, if not arrested, repeatedly so. In fact, he ends up pushing them and at times pushing community itself into crises.

Inadvertent and careless mistakes are relatively easy to tackle. But criminal mistakes are the most difficult ones to tackle because they are more to do with wrong intentions and criminal mindsets deployed by-design.

So coming back to the question, "How long does one tolerate a given abnormal behavior?" is like asking "How long does one tolerate mistakes of self or of others? How many times: Once, Twice, Thrice?"

My method is:

1/ Tolerate a mistake one-time while it's Inadvertent. Invest in training and putting Kaizen efforts on errors thus revealed in order to make the process mistake-proof. Establish complimentary SOPs (standard-operating-procedures), rules and regulations to prevent deterioration of the mistake-proof level attained.

2/ May tolerate a mistake second time while it's at Careless-stage. Put in training, Kaizen efforts and complimentary rules & regulations by revisiting the mistakes in order to make the process mistake-proof.

This way the chances are that inadvertent and careless mistakes may get prevented from getting matured into criminal ones especially that concerned with safety, dignity and rightful rights at personal level as also concerned with rightful common goals.

3/ So having given opportunity for structured learning and that of tolerating mistakes once or twice, tolerating it the third-time is being criminal on the part of the tolerates or the orchestrator himself apart from tolerating the so-called criminal making mistake. Because in that case it's the orchestrator who allows a small-mistake to grow into a crime or a crisis or a disaster.

Having established that a mistake falls in criminal-category, it should be dealt with with a sense-of-urgency.

Apart from enforcing rules & regulations used to deal with criminals while 'dealing with criminal mistakes', great leaders deal with 'causes of such intentional behaviors'. Like wrong intentioned poor leaders they don't corner the people making mistakes. That's a separate topic to be dealt with some other time on investing time and efforts in 'behavior-modulation' of the people concerned.
